Be Brave With Your Life

Since last summer, I have developed a steady journaling practice.  At least twice a week, I get up and do some movement and meditation and I pick up my journal.  It has been an amazing practice for me, and it has really helped me to move forward in my life.

As the year was coming to a close, I realized I needed a new journal, and was pleased to receive one that said “smart, strong, fearless, resilient” on the cover. What better words to inspire me before I started my writing practice?  Well, this weekend, I was in Staples, and one journal was sitting on the counter.  It’s cover, as you can see, says “BE BRAVE WITH YOUR LIFE.”  I had literally just filled the first book, and here was this most compelling cover, mountain, stars and all, and I KNEW that this was my next book!  Maybe, even, the title of the book I am writing, who knows?

So, you might ask, why this?  This week, I have noticed how this is what we all need.  Talking about reslience in the Joycast today really got me thinking.  Life, while beautiful, also knocks us down again and again, and we get up again and again.  We also hear people’s stories.  You read about someone who choked on a broccolli spear, someone who lost their job, someone who slipped on the ice.    What if this happens to us?? As we age, we experience many things and our minds are conditioned, perhaps biologically, to focus on the negative.  So the failures, the pain, the negative stories tend to stick with us more than the success and the joy.

So there it is, every day, the more you hear that is negative, the more times you experience a loss or a failure or a sadness, it is essential to head those words, BE BRAVE WITH YOUR LIFE.  Get up, get outside, try again.  Really, the beauty and the joy far outweigh the sadness.  Have the faith to move on, try to do something new, embrace life.  As Mary Oliver, my favorite poet, said, “I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.”
