Show Me How Much You Love Me

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with Sarah Winslow, and among other great advice, she suggested that I joyfully start the day with the prayer, “God, show me how much you love me!” I must admit that I bristled at the idea at first, because it was somehow so energetically different from practices that I had tried before. However, I have learned that Sarah is particularly wise, so I was willing to give it a try! Wow! What a prayer, what a way to look at the world!

I wrote a poem on my first day of trying this, which I might share later once it is refined, but the practice has OPENED my eyes to the beauty of the world. Those of you who know me know that I am an upbeat and optimistic person by nature, full of gratitude. I have written in a gratitude journal every day for years, and, frankly, prior to the journal ended most days with a prayer of thanksgiving.

This practice, however was so powerful, it seemed to elevate my appreciation for every little thing that much more. Simply asking that question, the whole world begins to twinkle. Show me how much you love me! I see that you have given me a sunrise today, and, wow, a nice bed to wake up in. Look at the divine spark in another’s eyes, shining out to meet mine. Look, I have a computer! And, the ability to type. My brain seems to be working mostly fine today. There are so many colors to appreciate. I can go on and on, you get the gist.

Being me, I, of course, have been thinking about WHY does this work? I’m not sure, but I think it is because it is such a positive prayer. There are many kinds of prayers or mantras that are asking for change of one kind of another, but that kind of prayer by its nature is giving words to things that you don’t like and want to change. Even the gratitude journal might make you reflect on the day and weed out or choose those things for which you are grateful. But this practice is just all positive. Look at the awesomeness! All coming from love! Even things that you might think are negative on face, a gift, coming from love!

I found this practice to be so elevating, I invite you to try it for yourself!! I’d love to hear how it goes for you!
