Move Forward with Grace

One thing that I have been noticing and reflecting on recently is the fact that life is full of change. Of course, we all know that, but really, life is full of change. Nothing stays the same. The very beauty of being an alive human is that we ourselves are always changing as are the people around us. One thing I notice over and over again is how when one accepts change with grace, life moves forward with light and joy. It is in the holding back and the wishing things that things would be otherwise that there is suffering. My reality is that I am a certain age, as are all of the members of my family. Those of us lucky enough to be here are at the stage in life that we are, and we cannot change it, and every stage brings such opportunity.

For many reasons, life’s changes are brilliantly illuminated during the holidays. We bring out a decoration made by a deceased relative, we hear a song we used to sing when we were young, we make a recipe that has been eaten over countless holidays, we see a gift that would be perfect to give to someone who is no longer a friend. Any number of things might remind us of a joy in a different time. But, we can’t live all the joys at once. It is key to remember to look for the joy in our lives TODAY, not some wistful past or image of someone else’s life.

It is important to remember that for every goodbye there was also a hello, for every door closed, another door opened. As I have learned in my life and on pilgrimage, trusting the path to bring exactly what you need, even when you are down or lost, is such an important practice.

I invite you to notice next time you are stuck in the past or wishing that life would be different or, even worse, wishing some other person travelling the path with you would be different. See if you can make the choice to dust yourself off and move forward with grace. Find a way.
